There once was a princess who loved to run away. She did not enjoy being in the castle, stuck behind golden walls and under a heavy crown. Her dreams were of the woods and the ocean and her exploration of each. Though her parents, the king and queen, often tried to keep her in the palace, they could not keep her for long and she would escape and go off on her own.

One day the princess met a peasant boy. The two quickly became friends and as they grew older, fell in love. But the princess knew she had to keep her love a secret from her parents who were eager to marry her to a prince from a neighboring land, as was the custom. In rebellion, the princess married her childhood friend in secret. The two took to the ocean and attempted to run away but the king and queen sent their most trusted guards to retrieve the princess and bring her home.

Once brought back to the palace, the king and queen annulled the marriage and sent word out immediately to the prince that their daughter was ready to marry. Except the princess was with child. A decision was made by the king and queen to poison the princess and kill the unborn child. The poison forced the princess to go into early labor but the child was born with a still heart, due to the poison.

Heartbroken, the princess locked herself away. In a desperate attempt to end her life, the princess drank poison given to her by an old friend who was a powerful wizard. But the wizard had lied and instead the poison was a dark spell, changing her into a dragon. Enraged, the princess burned the castle and the nearby village to the ground. Unable to kill herself, the princess -now a dragon- buried herself into the burning remains of the castle and fell into a deep sleep.

Several years later, the dragon princess is found and captured by the Dark One and imprisoned in a golden crown, only to be released by blood magic.
